Top Restaurants In Oaxaca City For Dinner
- 6 mins
Oaxaca. The very name conjures images of lively markets, handworked textiles, and, above all, an unmatched culinary scene. As the sun dips below the Sierra Madre, casting long shadows over Santo Domingo, locals and visitors alike slowly reemerge from their homes following the aromas of tacos and elotes. Deciding where to dine can be a rewarding challenge, with options ranging from revered traditional kitchens to innovative gastronomic experiences. Having savoured countless Oaxacan evenings, let us guide you through some of the city’s top spots for dinner.
Elevated Experiences: Oaxaca’s Fine Dining
For those evenings when you desire a more elevated journey through Oaxacan flavours, these restaurants elevate traditional cuisine to an art form:
- Criollo: Helmed by Chef Enrique Olvera (of Pujol fame in Mexico City) and Luis Arellano, Criollo offers a sophisticated, farm-to-table experience in a beautiful, garden setting. Their multi-course tasting menu is a celebration of Oaxacan ingredients and ancestral techniques, served with minimalist elegance. It’s an unforgettable culinary event. We recommend pairing the 7-course menu with their curated drinks menu.
- Origen: Chef Rodolfo Castellanos, a true ambassador of Oaxacan gastronomy, crafts dishes that are both deeply rooted in tradition and subtly innovative. Located in a charming downtown space close to the Zocalo, Origen provides a refined yet unpretentious atmosphere where every plate tells a story of the land.
- Pitiona: Chef José Manuel Baños Rodriguez presents a contemporary take on Oaxacan cuisine, often playing with textures and presentations. Pitiona offers a memorable dining experience, perfect for a special occasion, with dishes that surprise and delight the palate.
- Casa Oaxaca el Restaurante: A long-standing favourite, Chef Alejandro Ruiz’s Casa Oaxaca provides an iconic dining experience, often with a stunning view of Santo Domingo from its terrace. The food is vibrant, authentic, and consistently excellent, showcasing the richness of local ingredients and flavours.
Embracing Tradition: Authentic Oaxacan Flavours
For a taste of truly authentic, heart-warming Oaxacan dishes, prepared with generations of love:
- Levadura de Olla: A recent recipient of a prestigious Michelin star, Levadura de Olla, led by Chef Thalía Barrios García, offers an in-depth journey into traditional Oaxacan cooking. Rooted deeply in the flavours of the Sierra Sur, particularly from the community of San Mateo Yucutindoó, this restaurant prides itself on using organic ingredients cultivated in pesticide-free lands and wild harvests nourished by natural rains. Every dish, prepared with ancestral techniques, celebrates the purest forms of criollo corn, chiles, tomatoes, seeds, herbs, and other regional goodness. In this shaded courtyard on C. de Manuel García Vigil, each plate is given equal reverence, reflecting the belief that every ingredient and technique holds an inherited, infinite story. Just like in the villages of Oaxaca, a truly good meal here is incomplete without the perfect tortilla, a flavoursome salsa, and perfectly seasoned beans. Make sure you order their much-loved jitomates plate to begin, where you can taste a selection of native tomatoes drizzled in fruity vinaigrette.
- Zandunga Sabor Istmeño Centro: Dive into the unique and rich flavours of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. Zandunga offers dishes like garnachas and mole de cadera (seasonal), providing a distinct regional experience within Oaxaca City.
- Ancestral Cocina Tradicional: As its name suggests, Ancestral focuses on preserving and celebrating time-honoured recipes. Here, you’ll find dishes prepared with profound respect for the ingredients and cooking methods passed down through families. The garden setting makes for a wonderful option for a special occasion.
- El Son Istmeño: Another excellent choice for Isthmus cuisine, El Son Istmeño delivers robust flavours and hearty portions, giving diners a vibrant taste of this often-overlooked regional gastronomy. It’s also only a 2-minute walk from ALDEA TUYA in Barrio del Jalatlaco.
- Teocintle: This intimate spot delves deep into corn-based traditions, offering a profound appreciation for one of Mexico’s most sacred ingredients. Expect thoughtful, expertly prepared dishes that highlight the versatility and heritage of maíz.
Good Atmosphere & Mezcal
Oaxaca’s evenings often involve mezcal, and these spots perfectly blend great food with an excellent selection of the smoky spirit:
- Los Danzantes: A staple in Oaxaca’s dining scene, Los Danzantes offers innovative Oaxacan cuisine in a stunning, open-air courtyard. Their menu is creative, and their mezcal list is extensive, making it perfect for a lively evening.
- Los Amantes Mezcalería: This speakeasy-style mezcalería in the heart of Oaxaca City offers a curated selection of artisanal mezcals. It’s ideal for an evening of tasting whilst being serenaded by local legend, Don Zenon. Upstairs on the terrace offers a more elevated dining experience, with unmatched city views and a concise menu of excellent small plates and traditional dishes that pair perfectly with their mezcal.
- Sabina Sabe: This popular spot is celebrated for its incredible cocktail menu, particularly its mezcal-based creations. Complementing the drinks is a menu of delicious, well-executed Oaxacan dishes, making it a fantastic choice for a fun and flavourful night.
- La Mezcalerita: A lively and authentic mezcalería, La Mezcalerita also serves up satisfying Oaxacan snacks and dishes. It’s a great spot to soak in the local atmosphere and explore a wide range of mezcals and pulque. Ivan and I came here on one of our first dates back in 2018, and it’s still our go-to bar for date nights.
- Tobaziche: Offering a good selection of mezcals and a menu of local dishes, Tobaziche provides a relaxed atmosphere and cosy terrace for enjoying both the spirit and the cuisine of Oaxaca.
Casual Settings & Local Favourites
For more laid-back evenings or exploring diverse flavours:
- Adama: This Middle Eastern-inspired garden restaurant brings fresh ideas to the Oaxacan dining scene, often with a focus on contemporary interpretations of comida arabe. Their hummus, tahini and roasted cauliflower are our favourites to share.
- El Tendajón: A charming spot that features traditional Oaxacan dishes in a relaxed setting, close to the city centre. We love the short-rib tacos.
- Sur a Norte: As the name suggests, this restaurant offers a blend of flavours from different regions, but the best part of this restaurant is the view over Santo Domingo. Over the weekend, you can spend afternoons drinking on the terrace, witnessing festivities and wedding celebrations.
- Tastavins: Once a cosy Italian restaurant on Calle Murgía, Tastavins is loved for its huge portions of freshly made pasta dishes and large glasses of wine. Newly reopened in Barrio de Jalatlaco, we can get our favourite pasta within a minutes’ walk from ALDEA TUYA.
- Las Quince Letras: A well-regarded establishment known for serving traditional Oaxacan food, especially moles, with consistent quality and flavour.
Oaxaca’s dinner scene is as rich and complex as its moles. From world-class tasting menus to humble, authentic eateries, there’s an experience waiting for every palate. Don’t be afraid to wander, to try something new, and to let the flavours of this incredible city guide your evening. You can rarely fail. ¡Buen provecho!

ALDEA TUYA
We are Sophia & Iván and we opened the doors to ALDEA TUYA in September 2020 as a way to showcase and share with others what we love most about Oaxaca. We've spent the past 5 years exploring every corner of the state as well as other parts of Mexico in search of handicrafts, textiles and ceramics to inspire our home decor, so guests can experience Oaxaca and beyond from their bedroom. We met in 2018 in a bar in Oaxaca City and have since travelled in our 1975 VW Combi selling coffee across Central America with our 6 year old street dog.
